Rules, history, and its global expansion

The Rules of Sumo

The goal of sumo is simple: defeat the opponent. You win by pushing the rival out of the ring (dohyō) or making any part of their body (except the soles of their feet) touch the ground. There are no weight classes, so technique and balance are essential.

History of Sumo

Historical illustration of sumo

Sumo has over 1,500 years of history. Its roots are found in Shinto, the traditional religion of Japan, where ritual dances were performed to please the gods (kami). These rituals evolved into strength contests among warriors.

During the Edo period (1603–1868), sumo was organized as a professional sport and the first formal rules were established. Clay rings (dohyō) were built and professional tournaments were born, still held six times a year in Japan today.

The highest title is Yokozuna (grand champion), a lifetime distinction that only slightly more than 70 wrestlers have achieved in all of history. Sumo was declared the national sport of Japan and its rituals —such as throwing salt to purify the ring— are maintained to this day.

Sumo Around the World

International sumo tournament

Although born in Japan, sumo has spread throughout the world. Today there are amateur sumo associations in more than 80 countries, organized under the International Sumo Federation (IFS), which seeks to bring the sport to the Olympic Games.

In the United States, the USA Sumo Federation organizes annual tournaments and championships, and has produced international champions. There are also active associations in countries like Brazil, Mexico, Mongolia, Russia, and many European nations.
